Skippings Fine Arts has dated this piece to the 1890s.
He received his education at the Quelliniusschool in Amsterdam and, once married, moved to Rijswijk. His work in the late 19th Century has a wonderful dreamlike quality, reminiscent of the Dutch Old Masters. Later in his career, the emphasis in his work shifted strongly to the depiction of large, light clouds. Kuypers died in 1932 during a game of billiards (!), at the age of 68.
Cornelis Kuypers was very successful with his work abroad, especially in the United States , where he sold a lot of work through the Buffa art dealership. In 1907 and 1911 he won medals at an international fair in Barcelona . His work can be seen in the Museum Arnhem , the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, among others .
Our gouache on paper measures 31 x 22 cm and is presented in a frame dating from the mid twentieth century. The overall framed size is 46 x 37 cm.
