A gorgeous, dynamic beach scene full of life, with so much to discover: walkers, a few swimmers braving the water, and a wonderful atmospheric sky of the kind you only find by the sea. This timelessly modern oil on canvas is a work by Catherine Watkins (1861-1947), a Canadian-American woman artist who travelled to Europe several times. notably in France. Having studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, she worked in Paris under Simon, Menard, Miller, and Dauchez; with Brangwyn in London, and Sorolla in Madrid. She painted throughout Europe, but I believe our painting depicts the Normandy or Picardy coast ... I feel Catherine makes it quite clear that this is not a mediterranean coast!

Quite a traveller, Catherine Watkins also worked in Woodstock, New York during WWI and was active in Los Angeles in the early 1920s. She lived in San Francisco for a few years around 1930 before returning to Europe, and then returned to Los Angeles where she remained until her demise in 1947. Our painting likely dates from the 1930s. Measuring 24 x 32 cm, the overall size in an excellent frame is 39 x 48 cm
