A touching and heart warming folk art panel, dating from the 19th century. It most likely depicts Saint Jean the Baptist or Saint Roch - depending on whether you believe the seated animal by his side is a lamb or a dog, which is arguable!

With gorgeous wood carved decoration to the top, the panel was probably part of a larger object, such as a wedding chest or even - and this is my theory! - a "carretto siciliano" - the ornate, colourful style of horse or donkey-drawn cart native to Sicily, which is profusely decorated with naive troubadour, battle and religious scenes. Painted in oils on a thick wooden panel with natural wear and tear which only embellishes this poignant objet, the artwork measures 33 x 21 cm
