Art Deco Period Surrealist Composition with Chess Board and Eyes Oil on Board

Description

According to poet and critic André Breton, who published The Surrealist Manifesto in 1924, Surrealism was a means of reuniting conscious and unconscious realms of experience so completely that the world of dream and fantasy would be joined to the everyday rational world in “an absolute reality, a surreality.” Here is a wonderful example of surrealist painting by Paul René Larthe , dating from the 1930s or 40s. Apart from being a painter, Larthe was also a costume designer and scenographer for the Paris Opera House and National Theatre in the 1930s. He worked notably with Serge Lifar and Albert Aveline.

Our oil on board is signed at the lower right and dedicated to Line Maul on the verso. Measuring 49 x 61 cm the overall framed size in a more recent frame is 64 x 75 cm.
