Description

George Delfosse (1869-1939) was a master at modulating colour. To quote Denise Brosseau, “he would move from rather cold colours to warm, highly luminous hues. The sombre tones borrowed from his religious paintings would often be pierced by moonlight, a subtle glimmering at the window.” Our little still life is a wonderful example of the artist's skill to play with lighting: it is dramatic, captivating and almost hyperrealist.

Georges Delfosse was born in Mascouche. He moved to Montréal in 1882, to study painting with Joseph Chabert at the Institut national des beaux-arts de Montréal, William Brymner as well as with Edmond Dyonnet. In turn, Delfosse taught painters such as Rodolphe Duguay and Narcisse Poirier.

In 1908, Delfosse stayed in Paris for seven month during his honeymoon with his wife Aline. It gave the artist the opportunity to frequent the studio of master painter Léon Bonnat, and to take taking lessons from Russian artist Alexei Harlamoff. Delfosse worked on the seven historical scenes during his time in France, which would later decorate the side aisles of Montreal’s cathedral. Our oil on panel, indistinctly dated ..8 at the lower right, is likely to have been painted during this sojourn in Paris.

Several museums and galleries (such as the McCord Museum of Canadian History in Montreal and the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa) and various other institutions own some of Delfosse’s canvases. The majority of his works, however, are to be found in the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec, which also has an archival collection devoted to him.

The painting presented here measures 27 x 19 cm and is signed at the lower right. The overall size in its original frame is 34 x 25 cm
