This wonderful floral still life depicting Anemones bears a connection to the greatest names in modern art! It is a work by Raymond Gaudet (1889-1967, see photo), an artist who had studied with Henri Matisse. A painter from the South of France, he lived in Cagnes-sur-Mer, where he was a friend and neighbour of the Renoir family, frequently painting in their garden. A watercolour by Raymond Gaudet which depicts the outside of Renoir's studio is in the Renoir Museum.

Cagnes was a hothouse of creativity. Not only Renoir and Matisse, but also Bonnard and Picasso were active there. In nearby Vallauris, Gaudet exhibited alongside Chagall, Léger, Matisse, Picasso and Poliakoff. At the Fine Arts Society in Nice, Gaudet's work is shown alongside those of Picosso and his wife, Françoise Gilot.

A kind, humble and gentle man, Raymond Gaudet's personality comes across in this warm and unostentatious depiction of Anemones. Painted circa 1920, our oil on canvas is signed at the lower right and measures 46 x 38 cm without a frame.

It is presented in a reversed profile frame, which gives the artwork a very modern, art deco feel. The framed size is 66 x 58 cm.
