Description

An impressionistic portrait study of a woman by Belgian artist, Jules Rullens (1850-1936). An inscription on the reverse describes the piece as a painting of the artist’s mistress, which creates a layer of intrigue. Did they first meet when she began modelling for him? Or has this been going on for some time?

We love the energy in this work and it’s been painted quickly with expression and vigour. Note how Rullens has caught the light on her forehead with a few deft marks.

Jules Rullens trained at the fine art academy in Brussels and is known primarily for interior scenes, portraits and pastoral scenes.

The painting is signed in the top left and housed within a vintage frame.

Overall size: 21” x 23½” / 54cm x 60cm

Year of creation: c. 1910

Provenance: Belgium

Condition: Artwork in good condition following a light professional restoration. Frame with age-related wear including cracks and losses.
