Isn't it funny how one can just tell when the sea is near, as one heads toward it? No need to see it: one knows quite simply. And I think this is what is happening in this painting: it is in fact a seaside painting, with the sea is only just out of sight!

The artist, Victor Lucien Richard was born in Salbles d'Olonne seaside town in the Vendée region, in 1848. Settling later in the neighbouring Brittany, he was very much attached to that western coastal part of France, and his landscapes reflect this. Many of his works are now in the Fine Arts Museum of Nantes, where the artist died in 1916.

He was a student of Pierre Auguste Coutan.

Our oil on canvas, dating from circa 1900, is signed at the lower right and measures 46 x 38 cm. With craquelure that has been stabilised, the painting has seen a fair amount of restauration and inpainting visible under UV light. It is presented in its original art nouveau frame. The overall framed size is 60 x 52 cm
