Provenance: A hand-written label verso reads: ''Purchased by Mr Harrison from The Duke of Buckingham''s collection at the sale at Stowe Sept. 12th 1848 Vide auction page 171 Lot 96. C. Yardley.''
According to the auction catalogue Lot 96 was described as ''Two female heads in crayons'' and bought by the Misses Yardley for 8 guineas. Perhaps the pair were split then, with this picture going to Mr Harrison? The sale of the contents of Stowe by Christie''s in August and September of 1848 was one of the greatest and longest on record taking place over 40 days.
