Would it not be lovely to be on the terrace depicted in the forefront of this painting, overlooking the fields and farmhouses of the South of France in the wintery sun? Our elegant cubist Winter-in-Provence landscape is a work by Gabriel-Marie Chanteau, an painter born 1874 in Brittany. (May I start with a bit of trivia about the artist? Gabriel had a twin brother, Alphonse, who was also a painter. The twins married twin sisters at a twin ceremony, at which the witnesses were twins, too - how about about?)

The Chanteau brothers became rising stars of the French artistic circuit early. Gabriel was a admitted to the prestigious National Academy of Fine Art in Paris, where he studied with the superstars of academic painting, Luc-Olivier Merson and Albert Besnard. By 1900, Gabriel, along with Alphonse, were commissioned to create artworks for the Universal Exhibition, under the direction of the master of Belle Epoque art, Jules Chéret. In 1910, Gabriel Chanteau was named official painter of the Marine, and exhibited at the National Military Museum as well as at the Paris Salon.

Although the twins remained close to each other, only Gabriel moved to the South of France in the 1920s. There he discovered the Alpilles mountain range, which had already inspired Cézanne, and the distinctive crisp brightness of its the winter light, so perfectly depicted here. Beautifully composed , gently cubist and luminous; the painting, dating from circa 1928-30 is a wonderful example of early 20th Century art.

An oil on canvas, it is signed at the lower right. Measuring 46 x 38 cm, the overall famed size is 57 x 49 cm.
