Fine, original, hand painted watercolour painting of a uniformed Hussar Officer, probably Austro Hungarian, circa 1850.
Signed C. Goebel for Carl Goebel. Austrian / Viennese artist, (1824 - 99).
The Hungarian Hussar''s were the epitome of romantic, light cavalry. Their uniforms were used as a template, copied and used as a basis for cavalry uniforms throughout Europe.
In this painted ink study Goebel captures the distinctive, lively style of the hussar uniform; white and gold skin tight breeches, outer jacket worn on the shoulder with loose swirling sleeves, underlining the dashing, devil-may-care persona adopted by cavalry officers.
Strongly painted watercolour and ink on paper, in good bright sound condition with no fading, old storage creases and marks.
Complete and un cut.
Visible image size 5,1/8'' x 3,1/2'' or 130mm x 90mm
The back with penciled attribution.
Framed and glazed in Victorian maple frame with gilt slip.
