Charlie Johnson Payne 'Snaffles' (British, 1884-1967)

'The Finest View in Europe' (rarer version), circa 1921, signed and inscribed in pencil ‘To Major Hawkins, with my regards & best wishes for 1922, Snaffles’, with snaffle bits blindstamp, printed and heavily hand coloured, in a later ebonised frame.

47 x 72.5cm (excluding frame)

Provenance: Major Henry Hawkins, M.F.H. Atherstone 1920-22, the sitter

This important copy of Snaffles best known print is THE copy which the artist presented to the sitter, depicted riding his favourite hunter Grey Dawn.
