Born in Rennes in 1998 into an important, bourgeois family, Suzanne-Gabrielle Girardville chose her own path in life. Instead of marrying, she became a painter.

By the late 1920s and 1930s, her name and her paintings was constantly cited in the French newspapers: in Le Temps (1936), Candide (1930), Le Petit Parisien (1929), La Semaine à Paris (1931) Le Journal (1928), Paris-Soir (1928), and many many others.

Le Figaro, in 1938, calls her art "verveux" - brilliant, vivacious. And this is true: it is delightful, young, fresh and full of positivity.

Dating from the art historically important period of the late 1920s/early 1930s, our painting is gently cubist - which gives it a very dynamic feel - and perfectly art deco in style.

Depicted is a a "lavoir", the traditional outdoor wash house where women met to do their laundry and to chat - under a gorgeous sky of art deco pinks, yellow and light blues.

Depicted is the Burgundy town of Saint-Seine l'Abbaye. Suzanne-Gabrielle had settled in the nearby city of Dijon, where she would live until her demise in 1963.

Measuring 65 x 54 cm, our oil on canvas is signed at the lower right. Framed in a luxurious frame by the Parisian master framers Delf, the overall framed size is 80 x 69 cm.

Works by Suzanne Gabrielle Girardville were acquired by the French State in 1935 and 1937.
