Skippings Fine Arts has dated this piece to the 1850s.
Astonishingly, we discovered this watercolour at an auction in La Rochelle, in Brittany. While unsigned, it may be possible to attribute it to George Sidney Shepherd (1784-1867).
Shepherd was a topographical and landscape painter who specialised in watercolours. He lived in France until 1797, returning to Britain at the outbreak of the revolutionary wars. He would come to focus on townscapes and, in particular, views of London in his practise. Measuring 18.5 x 27 cm at sight, the overall size in an antique pine frame with minor wear is 35 x 44 cm.
