While several horse-drawn carriages are rattling their way through the centre of the composition. It’s a painting that evokes the sights and sounds of a bustling city.
Berkes was born in Budapest and later lived in Paris, where he enjoyed capturing views of bustling streets. It’s possible that the street here is located somewhere in the French capital but it could also be in his hometown or Vienna. Berkes studied at The Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and his paintings were exhibited at the Ottó Herman Museum.
The painting is housed within a handsome gilded frame with foliate and decorative borders. Signed in the lower left.
