Description

A handsome late-19th-century oil on canvas depicting a rural view under a vast cloudy sky.

A well-worn track bends away to our left before disappearing into a copse. Two figures have stopped to chat - perhaps on their way home - while the sun gently illuminates the distant scenery.

We particularly love the horizontal layers in the composition, which reveal themselves as your eyes gradually explore the landscape.

The painting is housed within a beautiful period frame with swept corners and foliate ornamentation. It’s signed ‘A Weber’ which could relate to the German painter, August Weber (1817–1873).

Medium: Oil on canvas

Overall size: 22½” x 17½” / 57cm x 45cm

Year of creation: c. 1870

Provenance: Germany

Condition: One minor chip in the bottom right. Canvas relined. Craquelure but the paint layer is stable. Could be cleaned to restore its vibrancy if required. Frame with some age-related wear.
