A charming work, like a fairy tale, depicting lovers, protective of each other. drawing on Eastern European folklore, in the tradition of Marc Chagall, it has elements of both folk art and surrealism.

Dating from the 1940s, the painting is unsigned. It is however almost certainly an early work by Natan Gutman (1914-1990) and can be attributed to the artist. Gutman was born in Warsaw, and studied at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts from 1929 to 1933. After a spell in Belarus, where his work was shown at the Minsk museum, he came to settle in Paris. He exhibited at the prestigious Galerie Bernheim-Jeune. Bernheim-Jeune was a precursor presenting works by Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard, Paul Cézanne, Henri-Edmond Cross, Kees van Dongen, Henri Matisse, Le Douanier Rousseau, Raoul Dufy, Maurice de Vlaminck, Amedeo Modigliani and Maurice Utrillo.

From 1906 to 1925, art critic Félix Fénéon was the director of the gallery and was instrumental in bringing in the art of Georges Seurat. Throughout the 20th Century, the gallery was one of the centres of the artistic avant-garde.

Measuring 55 x 38 cm, the oil on canvas is presented in a luxurious frame with minor wear. The overall framed size is 73 x 56 cm.
