Description

While I usually have a gentle personal preference for high octane paintings, I fell in love with the masterful restrained palette and delicate luminosity of Gérard Barthélemy (1937-2002).

It is so rare that an artist manages to brings something fresh and individual to something as traditional as a landscape, yet Barthélemy manages - effortlessly. There is great depth -both literally and metaphorically in his art - you will discover something new in those trees, those clouds, the rustle of wind in the fields, each time you look.

Barthélemy was part of the 1960s "Jeune peinture" mouvement, which precisely held as its mission to modernise art while building on its traditional structures. Precocious from a young age, Barthélemy was awarded the prestigious Prize of Rome for the most promising young artist, allowing him to study at the Villa Medicis which was at the time directed by the painter Balthus.

In Paris, Barthélemy regularly had one man shows in two of the capital's most important galleries, the Galerie Claude Bernard and the Galerie Jeanne Bucher. Internationally, Barthélemy exhibited at the Biennale of Sao Paulo, as well as in Vienna, Rome, Milan, Brussels and Tokyo.

Works by the artists are in the collection of the Musée Nationale d'Art Moderne/Centre Georges Pompidou.

Our light flooded autumn landscape dates from the late 1960s - it was acquired directly from the artist at he time- and measures 65 x 50 cm. Signed at the lower right, it is titled on the stretcher. It is presented in a luxurious frame by Delf, the exclusive Parisian frame makers. The overall size is 83 x 66 cm.
