This sunny scene from the South of France depicts two figures gardening near a red-roofed farmhouse in Provence.

It is a work by Pol Presson, an artist from Cannes who exhibited with the Cannes Fine Art Society in the 1940s. We know very little else about Presson, although paintings by him have appeared in prestige auctions in Paris, Monaco and Lucerne. A landscape artist, his main focus was the beauty of his native Cote d'Azur.

The painting presented here is interesting as the inscription on the original frame situates the scene precisely: this is the "Ferme Berini au Cannet" - Berini's Farm at Le Cannet, a village just Cannes. On the frame figures also the name and Cannes address of Flo Presson - also a painter, an probably the wife or daughter of the artist. It is likely that this painting had a special significance for the family.
