Description
A large and majestic winter scene by French artist André Courty (born 1916). Dated February 1963, it is astonishing to think that this incredibly fresh and modern looking piece is coming up to 60 years of age! Courty, born in the Creuse region, initially focussed on landscape in his practise, in the tradition of the impressionists. In the 1960s, however, he discovered jazz, and with it, a freer type of expression in abstraction. Our painting dates from precisely this interesting poiny in time where figuration is in the process of giving way to the non representational. While of course the winter scene is clearly recognisable, every segment of the painting could be a small abstract composition in itself, reminiscent of de Stael. Measuring 65 x 80 cm, the oil on canvas is signed at the lower left, signed again to the verso where it is also titled Neige - Montlhéry and dated February 1963. Monthléry is an ancient village in the Ile de France region near Paris. The overall framed size is 73 x 87 cm. Nous parlons français, und wir sprechen auch Deutsch! Paintings may be viewed in Norwich and in Paris, as well as in London and Cambridge by appointment. Please contact us if you would like further details and images of an artwork.
