A jubilant and etherial floral still life depicting a bouquet of flowers in a vase - surrounded by a host of silver butterflies! And yes: the butterfly wings do shimmer in actual silver, making the artwork a lovely example of the French arts and crafts movement, in which women painters were particularly prominent.

Yes again - our painting was indeed painted by a woman, Suzanne-Raphaële Lagneau (born 1890). A member of the Société Nationale des Artistes Français, she exhibited at the Paris Salon but also, extraordinarily, at the Salon in Tunis. Well known for her book illustrations of works by Flaubert, La Fontaine and Henri Bordeaux, Suzanne also taught drawing in Paris art schools.

Painted circa 1915-1920, our oil on panel is signed at the lower left. On the verso, there is an exhibition label from the Salon des Artistes Français with her Montparnasse studio address at 15 rue Boissonade, as well as a landscape sketch. Measuring 46 x 33 cm, the painting is presented in its original silver frame, which however has some visible repair. The overall framed size is 55 x 42.5 cm.
