Description

A gorgeous, azure-skied view of a Venetian canal and its typical terracotta coloured buildings, dating from the 1920s or 1930s. The atmosphere of the city is perfectly rendered, with a composition that is resolutely modern and has an art deco feel to it.

Presumably French in origin, the painting is signed Courtois-Suffit, name of a grand Parisian family which held architects, writers and physicians in its ranks. A partial label on the verso gives the artist's address as rue Fontaine in the 16th arronissement.

Measuring 60 x 46 cm, the oil on canvas is has imperfections, with slight cockling, visible repair and splintering that has been consolidated. The overall presented in a silver frame is 75 x 59 cm.
