A delightful, sunny and colourful Caribbean seascape by Haitian master Edouard Wah (1938-2003), depicting fishermen in their sailboats near the beach, with the backdrop of a village and palm trees. I have been particularly charmed by the boat called "Merci Dieu"!

Wah was born and raised in the country's capital city of Port-au-Prince to a Haitian mother and a Chinese immigrant father. From the age of seven he received his first formal instruction in perspective and anatomy and was tutored by one of Haiti's premier art teachers.

In 1952, Wah and his younger brother Bernard studied at Foyer des Arts Plastiques in Port-au-Prince, learning new techniques from Haitian first generation masters such as Petion Savain, Dieudonne Cedor, Luckner Lazard.

In 1963, Wah founded the cultural center "Calfou" in Port-au-Prince, as a means of allowing people to experience Haitian culture, notably the arts and music. During that same year, he and his brother were commissioned by the Haitian government to restore the murals in the bicentennial section of the city, which encompassed cultural centers and public buildings in the capital. His paintings features scores of books on Haitian art and feature in collections all over the world.

The painting presented here measures 45.5 x 60.5 cm and is signed and dated 1967 at the lower right. The overall size in a more recent reddish frame are 52 x 68cm.
