A mysterious masterpiece by Jacques van den Bussche. The blue vase, the room, the open window seem to be cut from the same cloth as a dream: evocative, delicate, transparent...and forever escaping us.

With its translucent colours that almost give an effect of stained glass, it a rich and rewarding work of art by this leading figure of the French "Jeune Peinture" movement. Resolutely modern, it is figurative - but with a twist.

Born in 1925, Jacques van den Bussche studied at Fine Arts Academy of Marseilles, his home town, and subsequently at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon de la Jeune Peinture from 1953 onwards, as well as at the Salon d'Automne.

In 1961 he signed a contract with the prestigious Galerie Jean Claude Bellier (run by Vuillard's godson), where he would exhibit for the next decade, with one man shows in 1961, 1964 and 1970.

Our painting is an oil on board measuring 38 x 61 cm. Dating from circa 1960, It is signed at the lower right, and signed again and titled "Le vase bleu" on the verso.

The overall size in a luxurious frame by Delf, one of the most reputable French framers, is 55 x 78 cm
