Description

A large cubist painting by Calixte Henry, a Haitian artist of international renown. It is a sensitive, abstracted "Maternité" - a depiction of a mother and child.

Born in Port-au-Prince on January 3, 1933. Calixte Henry initially worked as a telegraph operator before enrolling in the Centre d'Art in 1955. The Centre d'Art was the cradle and hothouse of Haitian painting, where promising young artists were given the opportunity to experiment and study.

In 1959, Calixte he left the Centre d'Art to continue his research alone.

He worked with the Galerie Monnin, and became interested in cubism. He ceased painting with brushes to use razor blades instead, giving his painting a fine touch and transparency. He also started painting with a palette knife. The painting presented here, with its innovative structure and interesting texture, stems from this innovative period. It is signed and dated 1970 at the lower left.

Henry received a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation of New York in the 1980s. His works have been widely exhibited in France and in Switzerland as well as in Haiti and the US, and have a world-wide reputation among galleries and collectors. His paintings features scores of books on Haitian art.

An oil on hardboard measuring 60 x 59 cm, the overall size in its original, hand carved traditional haitian frame is 70 x 70 cm.
