Description

This is a lovely set of three paintings of birds in gouache dating from around 1860.These have been expertly painted onto mica in bold colours which gives a them a great depth and clarity. Mica (a transparent mineral) was used in India around this time to imitate paintings on glass that were popular in Europe. Many examples are held by the V&A. The appeal of Mica as a support for painting is due to its very smooth surface. The paint sits on it without sinking in making the colours very intense. These are set in circular gilt frames with a black and gilt Verre Eglomise Mount.

The paintings measures in diameter overall, including the frame.
