The French call the early 19th Century the "romantic period" in painting. Looking looking at this atmospheric, idealised landscape with its exquisitely painted trees, it is easy to see why.

There are two lady cowherds chatting, feet in the water, where a little washerwoman is also doing laundry. Into the bargain, you get not only one, but two shepherds with their respective flocks, and cattle grazing peacefully by the river. There is a delightful tranquility in this unsigned painting, which dates from circa 1810 and is still on its original, unlined canvas. Measuring 38 x 46 cm, the framed size in its original Empire-period frame are 50 x 58 cm.
