Wilhelm Westerop, Portrait of a Doberman, Oil Painting

Description

A fine early 20th-century portrait of a Doberman by German painter, Wilhelm Westerop (1876-1954).

Westerop was known for his portraits of animals, particularly horses and dogs, and this piece is very typical of his work. In 2013, a similar portrait of a boxer dog sold at Bonhams in the United States.

The painting is signed in the lower right and housed within a frame that’s probably the original.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Overall size: 17” x 21” / 44cm x 53cm

Year of creation: c. 1925

Provenance: Germany

Condition: Scattered paint losses and the canvas is a little undulant. Some scuffing around the edges and frame with light wear.

Artist’s auction highlight: £2,517 achieved for ‘Pferdeportrat: "Goldmaid" von Goldapfel a.d, Amandara’ in 2013.
