Miniature Study Oil on Tin Plate After Hogarth 1800 Frame Georgian

19th century
Description

English hand painted portrait miniature oil painting on tinplate, in original papier mache frame, circa 1800.

A study inspired by Hogarth's etching 'The Laughing Audience' , originally used as subscription tickets, executed 1733-39.

The caricatured audience in the 'cheap seats' are watching a very funny play.

The foreground shows three members of the wood wind section of the orchestra, one of whom has removed his wig for comfort.

Hogarth here turns his keen eye to the audience in all it's variety, the results displaying a mix of typical dark Hogarthian satire but here tempered by warmth and geniality.

All in very good sound condition minimal superficial surface marks and scatches, no damage or repair.

Frame 155mm x 128mm, visible image 97mm x 70mm

Declaration

Andrew Nethercott Antiques has dated this piece to the 1800s.
