A beautiful and mysterious landscape depicting depicting a woman in a wide landscape. She is standing on a plateau, overlooking a valley, and what might be a quarry. Curiously - and interestingly - there seems to be a faint inscription "Montmartre 184(?) on the verso.

Dating from circa 1850, the painting is a good example of French 19th Century Realism, the art movement spearheaded by artists such as Corot and Daubigny,

In a spirit of rapt attentiveness to their environment, artists painted directly from nature, without idealisation and without moral judgement.

In their paintings, we notice a unusual angles, great sensitivity and an astonishing modernity, and something very engaging - which well describes the work of art here presented.

Measuring 18 x 28 cm and unsigned, the oil on panel has been cleaned and restored. In a more recent frame, the overall framed size is 27.5 x 38.5 cm
