A fine late 19th-century oil on panel depicting a woman walking along a countryside track towards a rustic old building.

The artist, Cornelis I Westerbeek (1844-1903) has captured the effects of light superbly well. He’s created a peaceful evening atmosphere that’s very typical of his style.

We also love how the landscape is comprised of layers, which increase in lightness until they fade from sight. And note how the tallest tree guides our view diagonally downwards towards the figure, which helps us to explore the piece.

Relaxed rural scenes such as this were popular during the 19th-century as they provided a restful moment in an increasingly industrialised world. Westerbeek was one of several artists particularly adept at fulfilling that need.

Westerbeek studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and several of his works are held in museum collections.

The painting is monogrammed in the lower left, inscribed on the reverse and housed within a beautiful gilded foliate frame.

Condition: There’s a lighter area on the right which appears to be due to framing but otherwise very good. Frame with some light age-related wear.

Artist’s auction highlight: £3,000 achieved for ‘Ducks resting in a meadow by a pond’ at Christie’s, Netherlands, in 1989.
