Oil Painting of a Donkey by E.dean

A wonderful oil on board painting of a donkey by E.Dean. The painting is beautifully worked in exquisite detail and the nature of the donkey perfectly captured. The landscape background is also brilliantly observed. The work is signed and dated to the lower left: 'E. Dean 1883'. I can found no exhibition records for E.Dean though there are other examples of his works which were all animals. It is most likely he was a commercial artist specialising in livestock works. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. The gilt frame is of the right period but not the original it has had some old repairs. The whole is a really charming work with great period decorative appeal.
