This sun-drenched view of Martigues harbour, with its colourful houses and fishing boats, is a beautiful example of the style of painting that originated in the South of France in the early 20th Century.

Artists applied paint in vibrant colours with a paint knife rather than with a brush, creating think impasto. The result is joyous, vibrant and high octane.

Nicknamed the "Provençale Venice", the village of Martigues is a point of passage between the Mediterranean Sea and the Sea of Martigues, close to the Côte d'Azur.

The charm of its canals, its docks and bridges made it "The Venice of Provence", and numerous painters, such as Raoul Dufy, Charles Camoin and Félix Ziem painted there.

Measuring 32 x 51 cm approx, with some concave warping often found on plywood, the unsigned painting is set in a rudimentary "cradle" in its original vintage frame which has some wear. The overall framed size is 42 x 62 cm
