Description

An evocative 18th-century provincial depiction of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It’s an atmospheric old piece that was probably originally housed in a church or private place of worship.

Christ is dressed in red and white robes and bears several marks from his crucifixion. Blood runs from his crown of thorns and the wounds on his body.

In his right hand, he carries some wheat, which is synonymous with traditional Christian iconography. Throughout the centuries, wheat has been used in art to signify resurrection, sacrifice and death.

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.” John 12:24-26.

The painting is housed within a suitable later frame.

Provenance: Germany

Condition: The canvas is formed of thick woven linen as is typical for the 18th century. It has craquelure throughout but the paint layer is stable. There’s a little dirt in areas but overall it’s very presentable. Canvas relined and stretchers replaced. Frame with some light age-related wear.
