An attractive early 20th-century oil on wood by French artist, Edmond Le Bienvenu-Dutourp (1878-1945). It depicts a street in the rural commune of Clecy in the Normandy region, which is an area the artist knew well.

It’s a charming little painting and you can almost hear the chickens as they scuttle around pecking the earth. The composition is dominated by a large tree that splits the view - it draws our eye towards the ivy-covered buildings on the right and then out towards the horizon.

Edmond Le Bienvenu-Dutourp studied at l'ecole des beaux-arts in Caen and was represented at every salon in bas-Normands until 1940. He served in the Navy during the First World War and his sister, Valentine, was also an artist.

The painting is signed in the lower right and housed within a beautiful gilded frame.
