Description

A luminous view of an ancient medieval hillside town in the Pyrenees. Depicted is Saint Jean Pied de Port, the old capital of the traditional Basque province of Lower Navarre, founded by the Kings of Navarre. It has traditionally been an important point on the Way of St. James, the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

Dating from the 1940s or early 1950s, it is a work by noted landscape artist André Beronneau (Bordeaux 1886–1973) who exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris.

Painted with a paint knife rather than with a brush, as was traditional for the Southern French masters, the artwork measures 55 x 46cm and is signed at the lower right. It is situated on the verso, where there are also the remains of an exhibition label with the title.

The artwork is presented in its original, beautifully hand sculpted "Montparnasse" frame. The overall framed size is 72 x 63 cm.
