The Snobbish Snail: A Bright Colourful Modernist and Whimsical Oil on Canvas by Australian Frederic Arthur Jessup

Description

A lovely and imaginative oil on canvas by Australian Frederick Arthur Jessup (1920-2007), which is whimsical and elegant at the same time.

Delighting in the depiction of flowers and animals which he paints with gusto and light, Jessup here introduces us to a "snobbish snail" or "escagot espagnol".

Born in Victoria in 1920, Jessup studied at the East Sydney Technical College, Jessup won a travel bursary in 1944, enabling him to travel from his native Australia to study in Europe.

He arrived in France in 1949. He was represented by the prestigious Wally Findlay Galleries in Paris, Palm Beach and New York. According to the previous owners, the painting presented here was acquired from Wally Findlay Paris in the 1960s.

An oil on canvas measuring 27 x 35 cm signed at the lower right, the overall size in a more recent frame is 39.5 x 47.5 cm
