A fascinating 19th Century oil on panel which depicts two washerwomen by a stream in a mysterious landscape. A lovely impasto confers great depth to the dense forest and tangled vegetation, which is almost jungle-like.

Painted with a restraint palette of earth colours, with touches of vibrant green where one would expect blue, it is a bold, modern and unconventional work.

Dating form circa 1850-60, the painting is unsigned. Stylistically, it resembles the work of Narcisse Diaz de la Pena (1807-1876), the great romantic and Barbizon school artist.

Measuring 22 x 27 cm, the overall framed size in a more recent frame is 30,5 x 35,5 cm
