A rare good quality 19th Century Grand Tour patinated cabinet bronze of The Capitoline Wolf suckling Romulus and Remus on a stepped Marmo Rosso Levanto and black marble base. Well cast with fine detail and good patina, rarely seen mounted on marble. The Capitoline Wolf has been the symbol of Rome since ancient times and one of the most recognisable icons of ancient mythology. The sculpture has been housed since 1471 in the Palazzo del Conservatori on the Capitoline Hill. Rome, circa 1890.
