Large Oil Painting Of The Dogs Of George VI

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A very unusual and interesting oil on canvas depicting the dogs of George VI in a fantasy setting of classical ruins. The painting is beautifully done, with the dogs expertly observed and the whole treated with a lot of fun. The work is typical of the the 1930''s with the soft colour palette used. The painting is not signed which only adds to the whole mystery of the piece, I can''t fathom how or why it would have been painted. It is inscribed on the reverse ''King''s dogs coronation'' which I think dates the painting to the coronation year of 1937. The painting does retain the original frame which is carved wood, gessoed, and painted. The frame is in great untouched condition with a wonderful worn look. The painting is in excellent condition having been professionally cleaned. The whole is a unique work which has a lot of interest and huge decorative appeal.

Overall sizes in inches, including frame: 35 1/4 by 35 1/4
