Huge Victorian Coastal Landscape Oil Painting by F.w.pike

A huge oil on canvas coastal landscape scene by F.W.Pike. The painting is typical of Romantic landscapes of the Victorian period, large canvases that showed the majesty and awe in the wild landscape of the coasts and highlands. The painting minimises the influence of man with just some steamships on the far horizon again to express the power of the natural world. The painting is competently worked and signed to the Lower right 'F.W.Pike' this is most likely for Frederick William Pike who appears to be working around C.1880. The painting must have been his magnum opus as the size and scale would only have been attempted as an exhibition piece or commission. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. All aspects of the painting are the finest quality and the original gilt frame is stunning. The frame is colossal and the best quality throughout, it is in amazing original condition with all the original gilding and just the right amount of wear. The whole gives a fine English country house look and is a dramatic and imposing artwork. C.1880.
