Brave Fine Art has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
Many women shook off the fuss and exuberance of the 18th-century and opted for a demure flowing style that’s become synonymous with Jane Austen novels.
An inscription on the reverse of the portrait explains that this particular lady is grandmother to ‘Emma Knödgen’. Her name seems to also be mentioned but it's tricky to decipher.
The portrait is housed within an attractive gilded frame with extensive foliate corners.

Condition: It’s been looked after and recently lightly restored. One or two scuffs around the edges. The canvas has a fine network of craquelure but the paint layer is stable under varnish. Canvas relined. Frame with light age-related wear.
