A strong, colourful and surprising still life with an amphora and an artist's palette, with a fauve, expressionist feel to it.

A work by Pierre Gouspy from circa 1950, it is unsigned, but it came from the estate of one of Gouspy's closest friends, fellow artist André Claudot.

Born in Paris, Pierre Gouspy (1909-1981) spent several years in Asia, and taught at the National Institute of Art in Pekin in 1927. A master cabinet maker and sculptor as well as a painter, he later worked in Paris and in Dijon.

An oil on canvas measuring 46 x 38cm the overall framed size is 58 x 50cm.
