Eighteenth Century Italianate Landscape Oil Painting

A fine and early, Eighteenth century oil on canvas Italian school landscape. The painting is typical of the type with figures in the foreground and a castle on the coastline to give the work scale. The use of light is dramatic with a warm sunset casting its last rays and creating deep shadows. The painting is a very good example and must have been by a professional artist however as is so often the case with these works it does not appear to be signed. The large and impressive gilt frame is the original and is in excellent untouched condition with the original gilding and a wonderful patina of age. The painting has been lined probably in the nineteenth century and does show some signs of over painting in the sky, it is all competently done and as part of the history of the work I have elected to leave it alone. The whole is in excellent untouched country house condition and is ready to hang. C.1780
