Down to Earth: the Soil. Gardening Scene and Marine Landscape Double Sided Mystery Modernist Painting

Description

An interesting double-sided oil on board, depicting a gardener on the one side, and a water landscape with an industrial port on the other. I have opted to present the gardening scene - I love depictions of manual work, and the vigour and dynamism of this one in particular.

However, if you are partial to marine landscapes, the sides can be easily reversed, as show the photos.

Stylistically, the two paintings are quite different from each other, and I doubt they were painted by the same hand. The marine is signed Owen and dated 1963 at the lower right. I have not been able to identify the artist, as there are simply too many artists bearing that name.

The gardening scene is unsigned and looks rather French in style to me (I must add that the artwork was acquired in France). It resembles the work of the great Southern French artist Jean Arène (1929- 2020).

Our double sides painting measures 40 x 50 cm, and is presented in its original, simple vintage frame. The overall framed size is 45 x 55 cm
