I was delighted to notice - only at second glance - two doves on the roof of the dovecote in this warm village scene by Maurice Vaumousse (1878-1961)!

Although born in Paris, Vaumousse (1878-1961) counts very much as a Rouen artist. The city became his chosen home, and was where he studied with Joseph Delattre, Claude Monet's great friend. Like his master, he loved plein air painting, setting up his easle in ancient villages and near the Seine to keenly observe nature and depict it with an impressionist touch. Vaumousse was very much a colourist, as is apparent in the work presented here, rendering the effect of light painting with a rich and warm palette.

Dating from the 1930s, our oil on board measures 33 x 41 cm, is signed at the lower right and titled by the artist - presumably for an exhibition- on the verso. Attractively framed the overall size is 43 x 45 cm
