Description

A wonderful impressionist cloud study, which almost has an abstract quality to it. Depicted is a wide sky over the Seine in Normandy, near the village of Lavacourt, where Claude Monet also painted. While some of the clouds may even be carrying rain, light scintillates and radiates from the river.

It was painted by Jean Serrière, born in 1893 in Nancy, in the East of France. Put off by the conservative teaching methods of the traditionalist Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts, he studied painting at independent art schools and studios, such as "à la Palette", where taught Jacques_Emile Blanche and Laprade, and the "Academie Lejeune" in Montparnasse, where he befriended Marcel Gromaire.

With hands and untiring curiosity, Jean Serrière not only painted but also studied metalwork, silver and bronze-smithing, cabinet making and enamelwork. From 1921, he exhibited his fine crafted objects at the Salon des Artistes décorateurs, the Art Deco fair, while exhibiting his paintings at the Salon d'Automne.

Jean Serrière obtained a state travel bursary in 1922, and numerous prizes at national exhibitions between 1925 and 1937. From 120 to 1933, he exhibited at the Galerie A. Hébrard, alongsidee figures such as Degas, Bourdelle and Pompon. On 1938, he was awarded the highest French order of merit, Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur.
