Description

A gorgeous oil on canvas depicting olive trees along a path near Antibes in Provence by Jean Marc (1924-2008). Jean Marc was born in the small village of Montans - near the vineyards of Gaillac - in the South of France.

He started painting at the age 12, despite the opposition of his father, a wool merchant. While obliged to join the family business, but would spend every free minute painting, and studying art history. After fighting in the resistance in the war, the artist started work as a heating technician, which lead to an interest in soldering and blacksmithing. From the 1950s, Jean Marc would sculpt metal as well as paint, declaring himself a "blacksmith-peasant". He depicted his trauma from the war in sculpture, where reserving the art form of painting to express his dreams, and his love for nature and the beauty of his homeland, Occitania. He exhibited widely in the Tarn region, in Paris and in the USA. A retrospective exhibition of the artist's work was held in Bozouls in 2018.

With impressionist brushstrokes and lovely impasto, our oil on canvas was painted in the early 1960s and acquired by its previous owners in a gallery in Antibes. Measuring 46 x 55 cm, the overall framed size is 60 x 59cm
