Provincial English Folk Art Scene, the Bull's Head

1900 - 1920
Description

A charming turn of the century folk art depiction of the Bull’s Head pub and village green.

On the reverse, it bears an old auction label from Symons & Son of Barnstaple and it’s intriguing to think that the pub could’ve been in North Devon. We’ve been unable to locate it but hopefully it’s still standing in a village somewhere.

We particularly like the figure of the shepherd as he ambles across the green with his crook.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Overall size: 26” x 19” / 65cm x 49cm

Year of creation: c. 1900

Provenance: Germany

Condition: Good with no issues. Canvas could be easily cleaned to revive its rich colours but we prefer it as it is.
