A very interesting and atmospheric oil on canvas depicting a small group of travellers on the road. The painting is not signed but is typical of work from the early nineteenth century. The painting is in excellent condition having been professionally cleaned. The painting has been lined on a stretched canvas probably in the nineteenth century. There is an inscription on the reverse that reads ''A Birthday present from Mr B 1870 May 1st'' the date of 1870 is exactly right for the frame and this must be when the work was lined and framed. The frame is in great untouched country house condition with some minor repairs. The whole is a bit of a mystery and very atmospheric, it is also extremely decorative and gives a great period look.
